What is Maltego Search?
Search is a tool designed for conducting OSINT investigations on the go. It enables users to quickly search for information on suspects and threat actors, drawing from vast data sources, including social media, the dark web, identity databases, and breach data. Maltego Search operates with Maltego Data Pass, and each query consumes Credits.
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDES
Access Maltego Search
To access Maltego Search, you need to have a Maltego ID, and a Maltego Search seat must be assigned to you. If you don't have a Maltego ID, create one now. To learn more about product assignment, please check out our admin guides.
Once you have a Maltego ID and a Search seat assigned to you, simply go to the Maltego home page to start investigating!
Using Search for the first time
To start using Maltego Search, simply add your starting piece of information to the Search widget on the home page, select the type of information you want to search (e.g. email address, phone number, name, etc.), and click 'Search'.
As you can see on the images above, Maltego Search works with six types of information starters: e-mail addresses, aliases or usernames, phone numbers, names, passwords, and domains.
Maltego Search will then bring you back results related to your input in a table format. You can explore Search's analytical features to explore your results, or you can even deepen your investigation by running new queries on information that has been retrieved from your previous search.
Analytic features
Maltego Search comes with a set of filtering and analytic features that you can use to gain better insights from your search results. You can find these features on the top bar.
Filtering, bookmarking and selection
Use the search and filter functions to quickly scan through the information.
- Search: perform a quick search through your results.
- Filter: filter information based on Entity type and properties.
- Histogram: visualize Entities with date properties in a timeline.
- Bookmarks: bookmark Entities of interest.
When you have graph view active, you will be able to use additional selection features.
Views
Use different views to gain different perspectives on the data. Choose between table (table or card), graph, and map. Different views can be activated simultaneously for easy comparison between formats.
Data in Maltego Search
Maltego Search is powered by Maltego Data Pass, and each query you make with Maltego Search consumes Maltego Credits. To learn more about Transform credit costs, please consult this article about Maltego Data and Credits.
Expand your investigations with other tools
You can deepen your Maltego Search investigations by taking your results to Maltego Graph (Browser) or Maltego Graph (Desktop).
Maltego Graph (Browser)
Maltego Search and Maltego Graph (Browser) are built so you can easily navigate between the two tools. To start using Maltego Graph (Browser) from Maltego Search, simply activate the graph view. From there, you can run Transforms and continue your investigation!

Maltego Graph (Desktop)
To continue your Search investigation with Maltego Graph (Desktop), you can export your files in a Maltego graph format: .mtgx. To do this, click on the share button on the top left corner and select 'Maltego Graph file (MTGX)'.
Once you have downloaded the file, go to Maltego Graph (Desktop). On the top left corner, click on 'Open', and select the graph file you downloaded from Maltego Search. You are now ready to continue investigating!
